Making Difficult Passwords Easy

Creating a 6-Digit Numeric Password for Various Lock Devices

Source: Wendy Boswell of the LifeHacker blog

  • Step 1: Devise a 6-digit password.
  • Step 2: Add a birthday, or an important year, month, and day, to the 6-digit password, two digits at a time.
  • Step 3: Write that number on the lock.

→ If you forget the password, subtract the digits you added from the number that is written down. The result is the password.
This method can also be applied when creating 4-digit and 5-digit numeric passwords.

Creating Passwords of Simple Complexity

1. Create a password by converting specific letters to numbers

Example) Convert "A"-> "4" --------------------- HACKER -> H4cker
Example) Convert "A"->"4" and "O"-> "5" ----------- COCACOLA -> C5C4C5L4, ORACLE -> 5R4CLE
  (*) A long time ago, a Coca Cola server was hacked, and the password of the Coca Cola server was reportedly pepsi cola
Example) Convert "A"->"4", "G"->"6", and "E"-> "2" : ----------- GENERAL -> 62N2R4L

2. Create a password by inserting special characters

Caution is required because, depending on the website (or system), certain special characters cannot be used.

  • Choose a few special characters to use and remember them. (Examples: !, ~, _, @, and others)
  • Decide the position of the chosen special characters. (Examples: at the very beginning, at the very end, or in the middle of meaningful words)
Example) COCA COLA -> C5C4!C5L4

3. Other

  • Create a password by thinking of Korean while the keyboard is in English mode. Example) 위키시큐리티 → (English keyboard) dnlzl+tlzbflxl

Creating a Different Password for Each Website

  • Step 1: Create your own key to apply to every password
Example) "Generic Password for" -> gP4 (Note that a password is case-sensitive, unlike an ID)
  • Step 2: Create a password-generation rule for each website.
Example) "New York Times" website -> NYT
  • Step 3: Combine what was created in Steps 1 and 2 above.
Example) NYT+gP4
  • Step 4: Change the first character to lowercase and place it at the very end.
Example) NYT+gP4+n
  • Step 5: Join each meaningful word with the special character “_”.
Example) NYT_gP4_n
